Essential TV and Film Appearances of The Beatles 1966 - 1969

1966

Paperback Writer/Rain Promo Outtakes (London, May 1966)

As wonderful as all the promo films for these two songs are, the outtake raw footage of them all is essential viewing (if you can get your hands on the footage).
There's almost 20 mins of outtakes on Youtube and on DVD but collectors have around 75 minutes of pristine footage!

Eat The Document (Raw Footage) (London, May 27 1966)

After a night partying with Bob Dylan, John hopped into Dylan`s limo and they both were driven from John`s home to Dylan`s London Hotel
while a cameraman filmed them as they tried to be funny but failed miserably.
This footage was filmed for the feature documentary "Eat The Document" about Bob`s 1966 UK tour which runs for 52 Minutes.

Top of The Pops - Rain & Paperback Writer (London, June 16 1966)

The Beatles made a live appearance on "Top of The Pops" performing both "Rain" & "Paperback Writer". This legendary performance was of
course destroyed by the BBC and no copies were known to exist until not one but two bits of footage (both filmed by a home movie camera in
b/w off the TV screen) of "Paperback Writer" emerged in early 2019. One was only 11 secs long but the other one was just over a minute in length!

German Police Film - Various Locatons (Munich, Germany, June 1966)

The German police department sent a film crew to shoot footage of the Beatles on their German tour beginning with their arrival in Munich
as some sort of educational film about security and crowd control. Next they filmed them arriving at Munich railway station for a
journey to Essen. This is all in glorious colour and excellent quality.

Die Beatles (Munich, Germany, June 24 1966)

The Beatles began their 1966 tour schedule with concerts in Germany. They held their first two concerts in Munich the day after their
arrival. The German TV network ZDF secured permission to film the Beatles evening concert as well as parts of the opening acts. This was
all edited into a TV special they broadcast in early July as "Die Beatles". A complete pristine "Nowhere Man" from the concert was shown on the DVD of "The Beatles Anthology".

The Beatles Hamburg Press Conference (Raw Footage) (Hamburg, Germany, June 26 1966)

The Beatles held a press conference in Hamburg and from all reports it wasn`t very good with the lads becoming very annoyed at the stupid
questions being asked. Raw black and white footage of the pc is available on DVD.

The Beatles - Damals in Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany, June 26 1966)

While in Hamburg The lads were the subject of a 30 minute TV special called "Damals in Hamburg". This special is 95% about the fans but
you do get some short but nice footage of their arrival at the train station, their press conference,
arriving for their concert and brief footage from the concert.

The Beatles Recital From Nippon Budokan Tokyo (Tokyo, Japan June 29-July 1, 1966)

This is a NTV TV special "The Beatles Recital From Nippon Budokan Tokyo" that featured footage from their arrival and their second Tokyo
concert (grey jackets) from earlier that same day. This special begins in black and white with a look at the Beatles (empty) hotel
rooms then it cuts to their arrival at Tokyo airport and car journey to the Hilton Hotel. Then there is an interview done in their hotel
room. Next is nice colour footage of the Japanese concert opening acts followed by the entire Beatles concert (grey jackets).
Parts of the special (arrival and interview) were released on VHS in 1984 and again on videodisc in 1993 (suprisingly sanctioned by
Apple) along with more footage from their press conference and the inferior complete dark suits concert (which for some unknown reason
replaced the much better grey suits concert that was originally shown on Japanese TV in 1966). Please note that the original 1966 TV
special only broadcast the good grey jacket concert but the home video & laser disc from 1993 (only available for a short time in Japan)
substituted it for the dark jacket concert despite their VHS/Laser Discs covers showings scenes from the grey suit concert.

ABC News (Raw Footage) - Tokyo Press Conference (Tokyo, Japan, June 29 1966)

The Beatles held a press conference at their hotel in Tokyo. Numerous TV crews were there to film it.
Both black and white and colour newsreels exist. This is raw black and white footage from the US "ABC News".

Tokyo Concert #1 (Dark Jackets) (Tokyo, Japan June30 /July 1 1966)

The Beatles played 5 concerts at the Tokyo Dome in Japan. This first concert was filmed by the NTV (Nippon TV) network originally for use
in a one hour TV special "The Beatles Recital From Nippon Budokan Tokyo".However the microphones kept moving around making it difficult
to get quality vocals and making the lads very annoyed and ultimately making the boys perform a very average show. Brian Epstein
viewed the footage from that evenings show and deemed it not worthy for broadcast. This concert is however available in full.
Therefore the next day`s afternoon concert was also filmed and this was shown in a TV special. Despite Brian deeming
this first concert unsuitable for broadcast it didn't stop it from strangely being released in Japan only on VHS in 1984 & on Laserdisc (sanctioned by Apple) in 1993.

ITN News - London Airport Interview (July 8 1966)

After a couple of days in India to recuperate following their Asian tour the lads flew back home to London where they were greeted by the
usual hundreds of fans and hordes of press. "ITN News" filmed them arriving at Heathrow and interviewed them inside the airport.

Reuters - Leaving Skyways Hotel (London, July 8 1966)

After their return to London from their Far East Tour The Beatles drove to the local Skyways Hotel probably to recuperate and freshen up
from the long flight. A horde of female fans somehow discovered their whereabouts and descended on the hotel to await their departure.
When the lads finally emerged the fans went crazy, almost knocking John onto the ground. Reuters cameras were present and filmed the
chaos. These are some crazy scenes that were rarely ever documanted this close up.

American Tour 1966

Due to John's controversal comments, this US tour received much more attention than thier 1965 tour. Highlights from this tour are:
CBS News - Boston Airport Arrival (Aug 11, 1966) (2 Mins) Colour
ABC News (Raw Footage) - Chicago Press Conference (Aug 11 1966) (14 mins) b/w

Colour Home Movie - San Francisco Concert (Aug 29 1966) (3 Mins) Colour

The Beatles peformed their last ever concert at Candlestick Park in San Francisco. There are over a dozen home movies (so far) that have
come to light (mostly colour) that were filmed at their last concert. This is probably the best colour home movie footage of the concert that is available.

Not Only.. But Also.. (London, Nov 27 1966)

Hot on the heels of his first ever solo acting experience in "How I Won The War", John did some more acting in a sketch on Peter Cook & Dudley Moore`s TV show "Not Only..But Also..".

Reporting `66 Dec 20 1966

Fresh from their holidays, it was now time to record their next album which would be "Sgt Pepper`s Lonely Hearts Club Band". The UK TV
program "Reporting `66" got wind of the recording sessions so they sent a reporter to Abbey Road Studios who eventually managed to get
decent interviews with newly mustachioed John, Paul & Ringo but could barely get a couple of words from the always camera shy and now
bearded George as the Beatles entered the studios to continue working on their next album.

1967

Scene Special: "It`s So Far Out, It`s Straight Down" (London, Jan 18 1967)

Paul made his second solo TV apperance on the TV program "Scene Special" to discuss the youth and culture of the day. Very interesting 9 minute interview.

Penny Lane / Strawbeery Fields Forever Promo Film Outtakes (Kent, England, Jan/Feb 1967)

The Beatles filmed promotional films for their new single "Penny Lane"/"Strawberry Fields Forever". A few minutes of colour outtakes from
the filming have appeared on Youtube and DVD from various sources. However collectors have about 30 minutes of pristine outtakes
including a scene filmed and never used for the PennyLane promo that involves a strange frogman coming out of a lake and following them. Very Pythonesque.

A Day In The Life Promo Film Outtakes (London, Feb 10 1967)

Apart from the official promo numerous outtakes have appeared over the years in various docos and other promo films amounting to about 8
mins worth. However collectors have around 25 mins of further outtake footage in beautiful quality.

ITV News - Paul Interview (London, June 19 1967)

This is Paul`s infamous "ITV News" interview in which he admitted he had taken LSD.

Our World - All You Need is Love (London. June 25, 1967)

"Our World" was the first ever live, international, satellite television production. The Beatles represented England by being filmed as
they added the final orchestral and lead vocals to their next single "All You Need is Love".Earlier in the telecast, footage was briefly
shown of them rehearsing without any of their special guest "audience". In 1995 for their "Beatles Anthology" TV specials this footage
was colourised and subsequentially issued as a promo video to promote the Anthology albums and later issued on the Beatles "1+" DVD &
Bluray in 2015. The full unedited original broadcasts from the UK and even Japan exist on bootleg DVD's and are obviously of major historical interest.

Magical Mystery Tour Outtakes (Various Locations, England, Sept-Nov 1967)

The Beatles latest film project was Paul`s psychedelic brainchild "Magical Mystery Tour". In recent years a ton of MMT outtakes have
surfaced, both officially and unofficially. The first official release of MMT outtakes was 19 mins worth shown in the BBC`s "Arena"
program, "Magical Mystery Tour Revisited" in 2012. Next was their inclusion as special bonus features on the DVD/Blu-ray release in 2015
that included "The Making of MMT". The latest (and lengthiest) crop of outtakes have been on the 3 volume bootleg DVD in 2017/18 -
"The Ultimate Mystery Trip". Collectors have a whole lot more of outtakes which including the officially released material is close to 4 hours worth!

The Frost Programme - George & John Interview (London, Sept 29 1967)

John & George appeared on the UK TV show "The Frost Programme" and were interviewed by David Frost for 23 minutes. The Maharishi was also
interviewed in a filmed segment done at Heathrow Airport earlier that day.
The interview was about Transcendental Meditation. The complete John & George interview is available on DVD in good quality.

The Frost Programme - George & John Interview (London, Oct 4 1967)

John & George appeared once again on the UK TV show "The Frost Programme" and were interviewed by David Frost. The subject was once again
about Transcendental Meditation. The entire program is available albeit in fairly ordinary quality.

The Beatles Mod Odyssey (London, Nov 6 1967)

All four Beatles went along to TVC Studios in London to see how their animated film "Yellow Submarine" was coming along. Footage from
this day and another day in early 1968 were used in a mini-featurette on the making of "Yellow Submarine" entitled "The Beatles Mod
Odyssey". The best quality of this was issued on the 2012 blu ray of the remastered "Yellow Submarine" in 1999.
The previous 1999 DVD release used a substandard quality version.

Hello Goodbye Promo Film Outtakes (London. Nov 10 1967)

On this day at the Saville Theatre in London The boys filmed not one but 3 different promo films for their new single "Hello Goodbye"
utilising three different backdrops and at leaset 2 different drum kits for Ringo. The first promo (wearing their Sgt Pepper suits) was
exclusively shown on "The Ed Sullivan Show" in America. It took until 1993 until Apple released the promo to help promote the red and
blue CD re-releases. It was again issued in stunning quality on the "1+" DVD and bluray in 2015. The second version (pastoral
background) was also issued on the "1+" DVD and bluray in 2015. 4 minutes of outakkes fron Version 2 are also out there. The third
version (colourful triangle background) has never been seen in full but outtakes from it were used in an official compile version (known
as "Version 4") that was only available for many years on bootleg DVD's until it too was issued on the "1+" DVD and bluray in 2015.
4 mins of outtakes from Version 3 also are available too. Yet another promo was aired as well. The BBC after refusing to air the
Beatles official promo video (Version 1) for "Hello Goodbye" due to their stupid ban on miming decided to put together their own version.
They were allowed to film the Fabs at a film editing studio in London whilst they edited footage for "Magical Mystery Tour" and aired this footage on "Top of The Pops" on Dec 7.
This rare promo was thankfully included on the remastered DVD/Bu-ray release of "Magical Mystery Tour" in 2015.

1968

The Beatles Mod Odyssey (London, Jan 25 1968)

On this day that the lads filmed their end cameo for "Yellow Submarine" they were also filmed clowning around at Twickenham Studios for a
documentary on the making of the film called "The Beatles Mod Odyssey".
Outtakes were also featured in the original 1968 "Yellow Submarine" trailer and its reissue in 2010.

Lady Madonna/Hey Bulldog Outtakes (London, Feb 11 1968)

Around 17 minutes of outtakes footage from the Lady Madonna/Hey Bulldog session have been bootlegged over the last few years.

"I Beatles in Ritrio" (The Beatles in Retreat) (Rishikesh, India, March 1 1968)

The Italian "Channel 7 News" arrived a bit later in India but were given exclusive access to the Maharishi and his guests. Their footage
was then made into an almost half hour TV special called "I Beatles in Ritrio" (The Beatles in Retreat). Apart from footage of Indian
poverty and of the Maharishi and other non-Beatle guests there was also some wonderful footage of the Fabs and the Maharishi walking
down to the River Ganges for some fun in the sun including a sing-a-long with Paul, John and Donovan on acoustic guitars.
Rarely seen footage from India.

Larry Kane Interview (New York, May 13 1968)

During their New York promo visit John and Paul were interviewed by their old friend Larry Kane. Although the 10 minute interview was
supposedly for print publication only, Larry had a cameraman film the whole interview in colour. The interview remained unseen until in
2005 when Larry released a book called "Lennon Revealed" and he included a DVD of the interview with the book.

John and Paul New York Press Conference (New York, May 14 1968)

John and Paul flew to New York and held a press conference in New York to launch "Apple".
The raw footage of the press conference has become available and is on DVD.

Apple (London, June 11 1968)

The Beatles filmed a promotional film for their new company "Apple". Today they filmed a business meeting at Apple as well as footage at
Abbey Road studios of Paul playing acoustic versions of "Helter Skelter" and "Blackbird".Lovely colour excerpts were shown in "The
Beatles Anthology" in Nov 1995. Collectors now have a further 18 mins of outtake footage from Abbey Road including Paul playing an
acoustic version of "Mother Nature's Son"!

Music! (London, July 30 1968)

The Beatles were filmed at Abbey Road while they recorded "Hey Jude". This footage was used in the documentary "Music!". The special was
shown in cinemas in England in October 1969 before the feature film "The Producers" (an all time fave of George`s) and was then shown
in America on television as part of NBC`s TV series "Experiment in Television".
Apple used some outtakes from the filming during "The Beatles Anthology" specials in 1995.

Music! Outtakes (London, July 30 1968)

The Beatles were filmed at Abbey Road while they recorded "Hey Jude". This footage was used in the documentary "Music!".
At least 12 minutes of wonderful outtakes (different than what Apple used in the Anthology) is available.

Frost on Sunday - Hey Jude (London, Sept 4 1968)

The Beatles appeared on "Frost on Sunday" and performed "Hey Jude" in front of a live audience. There were three takes of "Hey Jude" filmed all of which are available.

Revolution Promo Film (London, Sept 4 1968)

Apart from filming "Hey Jude" for "Frost on Sunday" at Twickenham, The Beatles also filmed a promo film for "Revolution".
There were two takes of "Revolution" filmed.
The promo was shown on "Top of The Pops" on Sept 19. Both takes are available.

1969

Colour Home Movie - Beatles Photo Shoot at Tittenhurst Park (Ascot, England, Aug 22 1969)

All four Beatles plus Linda & Yoko went to John`s home, "Tittenhurst Park" for a promotional photo session. One of the fabs took along
their movie camera (Paul or George) and shot some silent colour footage. This lovely colour footage first came to light at the very end
"The Beatles Anthology" TV specials. Essential for being the last ever footage of all four Beatles together.

British Movietone - Unicef London Concert (London, England, Dec 15 1969)

John & Yoko (and George) appeared at the UNICEF concert in London. British Movietime newsreels filmed over 4 minutes of silent black and
white footage of this event which saw John and George performing together live in concert for the very last time.
However only 1:21 mins of the newsreel actually shows John, George & Yoko performing.
