The Beatles Anthology TV Broadcasts 1995 Part 1

"The Beatles Anthology" began it's journey way back in the late 60's as a project eventually given the title of "The Long and Winding Road".
Reportedly the project's beginnings date back to 1968, when the head of Apple Films (the film subsidiary of The
Beatles' own company Apple Corps), Denis O'Dell, began contacting television stations, film and newsreel companies for footage of the
band. The task was then given to Neil Aspinall in late 1969 to compile all the, then available, fab four footage that Denis had
accumulated (not that much) of the fab four with a view to compiling it into a documentary. Work on the film continued into 1970.
In February, The New York Times reported that their upcoming film "Let it Be" was to be a biographical documentary titled "The Long and
Winding Road". Neil was then working with researcher Nell Burley & The Beatles former road manager, now personal assistant, Mal Evans and
they continued work on the film during 1970. Apple was also reported as saying the documentary would be in cinemas in December 1970
but due to the legal issues surrounding the Beatles dissolution court case the project was abandoned. The in-house name for the project
had been reportedly called "Scrapbook" and at some point in 1970 a rough workprint was produced. This working print (aka "rough cut")
of "The Long & Winding Road" has in recent times been bootlegged and overall it isn't terribly good nor does it contain much rare
footage. As with many Beatle projects, this Apple documentary was then left in the Apple vault to gather dust before the whole idea was again brought up presumably in the late 1980's.

This is the contents of the rough cut of "The Long & Winding Road" (running 101 minutes in length) as released on the 2015 HMC DVD bootleg:
The opening uses a scene from the "Yellow Submarine" film (probably a placeholder for a proper intro sequence)."Some Other Guy" from the
Cavern Club is up next, with Brian Epstein talking over it. The Beatles in Liverpool from "The Mersey Sound", doing "Love Me Do"
follows with interviews of George, John, Paul and Ringo from that same film. "From Me To You" is then played, with a montage of clips of
the Beatles departing and arriving at airports and footage of fans. Next is colour footage of "She Loves You" and "Twist and Shout" from
"The Beatles Come To Town".Arriving in New York at JFK airport, we get a little bit from the press conference followed by the Malyses
brothers footage of the lads in a limousine on their way to their New York hotel while listening to their portable Pepsi radio.
Further footage from the Maysles brothers` documentary "What`s Happening: The Beatles in the USA" is then shown, with an incomplete "I
Want To Hold Your Hand" from the Ed Sullivan Show before we board the train to Washington D.C. The Washington press conference is then
intercut with footage from the concert at the Coliseum (just setting up, no performance), and then footage from their arrival back in London.

The well known BBC "Grandstand" airport interview follows, before we skip to next year`s Blackpool concert for George`s
introduction of "Yesterday", which is shown in full. Back to 1964 and a clip from "Around The Beatles" shows the Beatles in their
Shakespearian costumes from a part of the "Midsummer Night`s Dream" sketch. We now get a three way split screen with the concert portion
of "Twist and Shout", "Roll Over Beethoven" and "I Wanna Be Your Man" from "Around The Beatles" in the lower screen, whereas the two
upper screens show the Beatles on tour in various countries (mostly Australia) with Jimmie Nicol deputising for Ringo. This segment
concludes with some of the press conference downunder then back to "Long Tall Sally".A bit of the "A Hard Day`s Night" film is up next
before we get quite a bit of "The Beatles at Shea Stadium" with "I Feel Fine", "Dizzy Miss Lizzie" and "Act Naturally". The two latter
songs have transparent footage of the Beatles performing overlayed with audience shots. The segment ends with "I`m Down" from the opening of the film.

A marching band performs the theme song of "Monty Python`s Flying Circus" for a segment about the Beatles getting their MBE`s with
them posing and clips from the press conference after having left the palace. "Help!" film clips are up next. The screen is now split
in two, with the film performances of the songs "Another Girl", "I Need You" and "You`re Going To Lose That Girl" on the left and
action scenes from the film on the right. The word "Christ" is then shown on the screen, followed with the familiar Ku Klux Klan spokesman
interview on half the screen and statements from John, Paul and Brian on the other half. The "Beatles are bigger than Jesus" segment
ends with John`s excuse from the press conference. The "lesbians and prostitutes" press conference is next up, with perhaps a bit more footage than usual, but we don`t get Paul`s funny reply.

Scenes from "How I Won The War" go into the "Strawberry Fields Forever" promo film in quite crappy quality. The promo film for "A
Day in The Life" is next up, it too is in mediocre quality, both sound and picture. The final chord is missing and a Paul interview
about coming clean about his involvement with drugs is inserted. Split screen time again, with the "Our World" broadcast on the right and
the Beatles going about with their rendezvous with the Maharishi in Bangor on the left. The final "A Day in The Life" chord punctuates
the song, along with the Bangor interview of John and George talking about Brian Epstein`s death.

"Hello Goodbye" is now played, starting with footage of "flying clouds" going into the Savile Theatre promo film with them in their
Pepper suits which cuts over to the "outtakes" version (no. 3), returning to the Pepper version for the end and the dancing girls
finale. This is followed by clips from "Magical Mystery Tour" - "Blue Jay Way", the four or five magicians, drunken bus sing-a-long going
into "I Am The Walrus", aunt Jessie and Ringo quarrelling, John`s interaction with little Nicola and the "Your Mother Should Know"
sequence ends this segment on the film. The title song lingers through the opening of the Apple boutique with colour footage from that event and the familiar news film voiceover.

The computer printout of Beatles titles reveals that we are about to see some clips of the rehearsal of "Hey Jude" from the "Music!
Experiment in Television" film with the two Georges in the control room, supervising. This goes over into one of the Twickenham promo
clips for the song before it returns to the "Experiment in Television" version again.John and Paul then talk about the formation of
Apple Corps in an American interview, before we get "Revolution" from Twickenham, with inserts from the Apple promo film with the
discussion with Dick James taken from the "Apple" promo film. The Apple boutique closes and finishes with a funny shot of a businessman leaving with a free dress.

John and Yoko are now arrested, followed by rare outtake footage of "You Win Again" from "Let it Be". There is also some other
equally rare unseen "Let it Be" footage including a jam with Yoko Ono (all in colour), footage from the control room, and finally "I`ve
Got a Feeling" from the Apple studio segueing into the rooftop version followed by "Get Back" also from the rooftop that evolves into
scenes from Paul and Linda`s wedding and John and Yoko`s Amsterdam bed-in.

Footage from Ringo`s Dec 1969 "Late Night Line-up" interview while he rows a boat comes next. Then John is interviewed about the
future of the Beatles and has an argument with Gloria Emerson taken from the December 1969 BBC TV special "24 Hours - The World of John &
Yoko", before we get the then rare "Something" promo clip. "The End" from Abbey Road ends the film audio wise, accompanied with the
end from the "Magical Mystery Tour" film. (probably also a placeholder until proper ending credits were produced).
Curiously, the song from which the documentary got it`s title is never played.

Overall "The Long & Winding Road", as it was back then, looks a lot like the "Compleat Beatles" documentary rather than what it
finally became as "The Beatles Anthology". Although it is chronologically sound for the mot part, the quality of the footage, for unknown
reasons, leaves a lot to be desired but it was definitely for the best that it never saw the light of day at the time.

In 1972, Apple announced that production on the film had resumed and it was now titled: "Ten Years in The Life of The Beatles".
The film's production would continue off and on throughout the 1970s. Even during John Lennon's appearance on the "Today" TV Show
(December 16, 1974), he mentioned that the film was still in production. In 1976 Monty Python member Eric Idle had parodied The Beatles on
"Saturday Night Live" calling his group "The Rutles" with a performance of the brilliant "I Must Be in Love". It was soon decided to
extend this "sketch" into a full length TV special which was then filmed in the middle of 1977 and released in March 1978 as "The Rutles:
All You Need is Cash". George, being a close friend of Eric Idle`s, even filmed a cameo appearance in the film and had also provided
Eric with a copy of "The Long and Winding Road" whilst he was writing the TV spoof.

The next time the documentary was mentioned was on November 28, 1980 when John Lennon mentioned it in a legal statement he had
written as a reason for the then current Broadway play "Beatlemania" to cease production. His statement included this:"I and the other
three former Beatles have plans to stage a reunion concert, an event to be filmed and included as the finale to "The Long and Winding
Road", the official Beatles produced a documentary that is to be released in the mid-1980s". That comment is very interesting indeed if true.

Sometime in the late 1980`s, possibly spurred on by all three living Beatles having been back in the media spotlight in a big way
with Paul touring the World for the first time since 1979 along with his hit album "Flowers in The Dirt" and Ringo also hitting the
road for his first ever time with his "All Starr Band" and George being back at the top of the charts with his album "Cloud Nine" and then
with The Traveling Wilburys. John too had also been in the limelight in 1988 with his film "Imagine: John Lennon" and this documentary
film may very well have been the principal reason the project was brought back to the Apple table.Production then started again
sometime during 1990/1991 and it was decided that brand new contemporary interviews should be filmed with all principals to tie all the
footage together. Apart from the three living Beatles plus archival interviews with John, they also did new interviews with Neil
Aspinall, Derek Taylor and George Martin, These interviews began in Feb & March 1992 with George & Ringo followed in May & June 1992 with Paul.
Seems the interviews concluded sometime around May 1994.

"The Beatles Anthology" was strictly chronological and supplemented the new interviews with what they deemed "rare footage" but
which was in fact mainly fairly common (at least in Beatles fan circles). The absolute highlights were without doubt the home movie
footage they obtained from each Beatle. Without this never before seen footage the TV documentary would have been almost a waste of time.
However for all the rare home movie film, the TV specials also lacked a lot of footage that was available but not used, no doubt
because of time restraints but thankfully a lot of this missing footage was shown in the DVD edition released a few years later. Why this
footage was not used could be for a number of reasons (apart from time restraints). The main one being that their budget did not allow
for the purchase of some TV footage mostly due to the exorbitant prices asked for from the various companies that they had approached.
Another reason was that their researchers were lacking in the knowledge of what was available and never went looking for it. You have
to realise that the World of the internet had not begun back in the early 1990`s and unlike today the information regarding Beatles TV
and film footage was not available nor had any decent research even been published in magazines or books. The third reason, which no
doubt happened, was that Apple`s research team would approach a TV company to acquire the use of certain known footage but then the
company couldn`t locate it because of either their own bad archiving/misplacement or in many cases the previous destruction of the footage
(mainly done by the BBC and ITV in the 60`s and 70`s) or the footage had just "walked away" sometimes into the hands of high-end
collectors. This last scenario seemed to have happened more than you would think and even as far back early as the 1970`s.
Unfortunately Apple has never been a company that worked with collectors or fans on their various projects which is a shame.
