In a convoluted series of introductions, host Diana Ross introduces Lionel Ritchie who in turn intros some filmed messages from the likes of Little Richard, Peggy Lee & Chevy Chase.
Lionel then introduces Julian Lennon (both were live in America at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles).
Julian then, after a only a few brief words, lets Lionel pass the intro baton over to Phil Collins (via satellite)
in London who also says a few words before bringing Paul to the stage to finally receive his award and give a nice acceptance speech.
The whole show was broadcast live in America.
